Booking.com vs Expedia vs KAYAK: which is cheapest for hotels?

Ask ten travellers which site has the cheapest hotels and you will get ten answers, because each of them checked a different city on a different day. The honest answer is that none of the big three is cheapest all the time. Each has structural reasons to win in certain situations, and the gap between them on the same room is routinely 10–25% once fees and taxes are included.

What each site actually is

Booking.com is an agency-model OTA: you usually pay the hotel at check-in, and Booking takes a commission from the property. Its strength is inventory breadth — independent hotels, apartments and guesthouses that never appear on US-centric sites — and free-cancellation rates.

Expedia (and Hotels.com, which it owns) is more often merchant-model: you pay Expedia up front, and Expedia has negotiated net rates it can discount. That is why Expedia frequently undercuts on chain hotels, package bundles and member-only pricing.

KAYAK is not a booking site at all. It is a metasearch engine that queries dozens of booking sites and hotel chains at once and shows you their prices side by side. You still complete the booking on the provider’s site.

Where each one tends to win

• Independent and European hotels: Booking.com usually has the room, and often the lowest flexible rate.
• US chain hotels and last-minute deals: Expedia’s merchant rates and One Key member pricing are often the lowest, particularly for Marriott, Hilton and IHG properties.
• Anything where you are unsure: KAYAK, because it will show you both of the above plus Agoda, Priceline, Trip.com and the hotel’s own site, sorted by total.

The fee trap that changes the winner

Headline nightly rates are not comparable across sites. Booking.com and Expedia differ in when they show taxes, resort fees and city levies. A $129 room on one site and a $119 room on another can flip order at checkout once a $35 resort fee appears. Always compare the final total on the last screen before payment, and prefer sites that show it early.

The practical approach

Run one search that hits all of them, open the two lowest totals in separate tabs, and check the cancellation terms before you commit. That is the entire method used by people who consistently pay less for the same room. It takes about ninety seconds.
