How far in advance should you book a hotel?
Flights reward early booking. Hotels mostly do not. Hotel pricing is driven by expected occupancy, and for most city stays the price you see six months out is the same or higher than the price three weeks out.
City hotels: 2–4 weeks
For ordinary weeks in cities like New York, Chicago or London, booking two to four weeks ahead captures most of the value. Hotels open with high rates, adjust down if bookings are slow, and only spike in the final days when they are nearly full.
Resort and beach stays: 2–4 months
Resorts in Cancun, Honolulu or the Gold Coast have more predictable demand and less flexibility on rates. Booking a few months out avoids sell-outs and locks in room categories; last-minute rarely helps.
Events and holidays: as early as possible
Anything tied to a fixed date — conventions, festivals, ski weeks, New Year — only gets more expensive. Book the moment you know your dates, ideally with free cancellation so you can rebook if a lower rate appears.
The free-cancellation trick
Book a refundable rate early, then check prices again two weeks before travel. If the rate has dropped, rebook and cancel the original. This costs nothing and turns the timing question into a non-issue.
Last minute
Same-day bargains exist in business-heavy cities on weekends and in cold months, but they are unreliable and you lose choice. Treat them as a bonus, not a plan.
