Why car rental prices differ so much between sites, and how to compare properly
Car rental is where comparison pays off most. Rental companies distribute through brokers, OTAs and their own sites at different rates, and the extras are bundled differently on each. It is common to see a 30–50% spread on an identical booking.
What actually varies
- Airport surcharges: on-airport locations add concession fees of 10–15%. An off-airport branch a shuttle ride away can be far cheaper for a week-long rental.
- Insurance bundling: some sites quote with collision damage waiver included; others add it at the counter. This alone can be $15–$30 a day.
- Prepay vs pay later: prepaid rates are cheaper but non-refundable; pay-at-counter is flexible and dearer.
- Mileage and fuel policies: unlimited mileage is standard in the US and Canada but not everywhere; full-to-full is the fair fuel policy.
- One-way and young-driver fees: shown late in the flow on most sites.
How to compare
- Search the same pick-up and drop-off, dates and times on several sites at once.
- Open the lowest two or three and go to the final total with the same insurance choice on each.
- Check whether the location is on-airport or shuttle.
- Prefer free cancellation unless the prepaid saving is large.
When to book
Rental prices generally rise closer to the date, unlike hotels. Book early with free cancellation, then re-check two weeks out.
