Honolulu and Waikiki hotels: when to book, and the fees that add 20% to the total

Honolulu hotels are concentrated in Waikiki, which makes comparison easy and fees the deciding factor.

The calendar

• Mid-December to March: peak; winter escapes from the mainland and Japan.
• June to August: second peak with families.
• April–May and September–November: the value months. Weather is still excellent.

The view premium

Ocean-front, ocean-view, partial ocean-view and city-view rooms in the same tower can span $150 a night. Partial ocean-view is usually the value pick.

Fees and taxes

Resort fees of $30–$50 a night are standard in Waikiki, on top of Hawaii’s transient accommodations tax and the general excise tax. Together they add roughly 20% or more to the room rate. Booking sites vary in when they show these, so compare all-in totals.

Alternatives

Ala Moana is a walk from Waikiki with lower rates. Ko Olina on the west coast is resort-style and quieter. Kailua and the windward side are vacation-rental territory.
