Where to stay in London without paying Westminster prices

London is expensive by default, but the spread between areas is wider than most visitors expect. A comparable three-star room can cost 40% less two Tube stops from where the guidebooks tell you to stay.

By area

• Westminster, Mayfair, Kensington: the classic addresses and the highest rates. Pay for them if you want to walk to the parks and palaces.
• South Bank and Southwark: newer hotels, river views, often cheaper than the north bank for the same star level.
• King’s Cross and Euston: best for rail travellers and the Eurostar; a lot of new mid-range supply has pushed rates down.
• Shoreditch and Clerkenwell: the design-hotel district, competitive pricing, excellent food.
• Paddington and Bayswater: Heathrow Express and a dense cluster of budget and mid-range hotels.
• Canary Wharf: business district, so weekends are the cheapest in the city.

When

January and February are the value months. Summer, late November and December are peak. Anything coinciding with Wimbledon, the Chelsea Flower Show or a major Wembley event lifts the whole city.

UK vs US booking sites

UK-facing sites usually show VAT-inclusive prices; US-facing sites sometimes do not until checkout. Comparing a British and an American listing by headline rate is not comparing like with like. Always check the total in the currency you will pay in.
