Sydney hotels: the best time to book, and the areas that beat the CBD on price

If you are travelling from North America or Europe, Sydney is a reverse-season market: their summer is your winter. That trips up a lot of booking decisions.

The calendar

• Late December to January: peak. New Year’s Eve on the harbour is the single most expensive night of the year, and school holidays run through January.
• March and October: shoulder, good weather, moderate prices.
• June to August: winter, and the value window. Mild by most standards, and CBD rates are at their lowest.
• Vivid Sydney (late May–June): lifts harbour-facing hotels sharply for three weeks.

Where

CBD and The Rocks are central and priced accordingly. Darling Harbour has large convention hotels whose rates track the events calendar. Surry Hills and Potts Point are walkable, boutique, and often cheaper. Bondi and Manly trade a longer commute for the beach. Parramatta is 25 minutes by train and dramatically cheaper.

Comparing sites

Australian listings include GST; some international sites add it at checkout. Watch for the difference and for weekend surcharges at serviced apartments, which are common and shown inconsistently.
