Whistler vs Banff for a ski trip: hotel prices, timing and where to stay
Both are world-class ski destinations, both are in Canada, and both charge accordingly in peak weeks. The differences that matter for your hotel budget are inventory, distance from the lifts, and how sharply prices fall outside the holiday peaks.
Whistler
Whistler has more hotel inventory, spread across Whistler Village, Upper Village, Blackcomb and Creekside. That competition helps outside peak weeks. Christmas to New Year and Presidents’ Day week are the most expensive; mid-January and March are noticeably cheaper. Creekside is the value pick with its own gondola.
Banff
Banff has limited hotel supply inside the national park, and no new supply coming. Prices are more stable across the season but rarely drop as far as Whistler’s. The lever here is Canmore, twenty minutes outside the park, where comparable rooms are often 30–40% cheaper. Lake Louise is a separate, pricier market.
